New project by Beautiful Boxers director wins award
15 April 2005
The Coffin, the new project by Ekachai Uekrongtham, won the Hubert Bals Fund Award from Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF). Ekachai is best known for his directorial debut Beautiful Boxer, a real-life transvestite kickboxer who earned money from boxing in order to help his poor family and get his sex-change operation.
The Coffin is the story about Chris, a Thai-Chinese young man living in Sydney. On his 21st birthday, he flies off to Bangkok, despite his fathers objection, and is challenged by his friends to lie in a coffin for a night. That one-night near-death experience brings Chris to his longtime forgotten claustrophobia, and closer to the truth he is searching for.
Noted director: I want to portray about human greed. I want to tell that, no matter how we struggle to get rich, we only need a coffin-size space at the end.
A total of 28 projects were selected to participate in the program this year, including China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, the Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. Three projects came from Thailand, including Penek Rattanaruangs Invisible Wave, and Jira Malikuls The Tin Mine.
Sponsored by the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Huburt Bals Fund Award is selected by the Fund representative and gave EUR10,000 to a HAF project by a filmmaker from a developing country. HAF is a matchmaking forum that facilitates possible co-productions and co-ventures between Asia's most promising filmmakers and a host of film financiers, distributors, buyers and agents.
However, director Ekachai is now developing two projects at the same time. Besides The Coffin, he is writing a martial-arts script entitled Sword & Spirit, starring by Assanee Suwan (Beautiful Boxer) and Pitisak Yaowananon (I - Fak). The two actors are on sword-fighting and boxing training.
